    New Perspective on Galaxy Clustering as a Cosmological Probe: General Relativistic Effects

    We present a general relativistic description of galaxy clustering in a FLRW universe. The observed redshift and position of galaxies are affected by the matter fluctuations and the gravity waves between the source galaxies and the observer, and the volume element constructed by using the observables differs from the physical volume occupied by the observed galaxies. Therefore, the observed galaxy fluctuation field contains additional contributions arising from the distortion in observable quantities and these include tensor contributions as well as numerous scalar contributions. We generalize the linear bias approximation to relate the observed galaxy fluctuation field to the underlying matter distribution in a gauge-invariant way. Our full formalism is essential for the consistency of theoretical predictions. As our first application, we compute the angular auto correlation of large-scale structure and its cross correlation with CMB temperature anisotropies. We comment on the possibility of detecting primordial gravity waves using galaxy clustering and discuss further applications of our formalism.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review

    When a principal gives an order to an agent and advances resources for its implementation, the temptations for the agent to shirk or steal from the principal rather than comply constitute the fundamental problem of command. Historically, partially centralised command economies enforced compliance in various ways, assisted by nesting the fundamental problem of exchange within that of command. The Soviet economy provides some relevant data. The Soviet command system combined several enforcement mechanisms in an equilibrium that shifted as agents learned and each mechanism's comparative costs and benefits changed.     Relationships between Larval and Juvenile Abundance of Winter-Spawned Fishes in North Carolina, USA

    We analyzed the relationships between the larval and juvenile abundances of selected estuarine-dependent fishes that spawn during the winter in continental shelf waters of the U.S. Atlantic coast. Six species were included in the analysis based on their ecological and economic importance and relative abundance in available surveys: spot Leiostomus xanthurus, pinfish Lagodon rhomboides, southern flounder Paralichthys lethostigma, summer flounder Paralichthys dentatus, Atlantic croaker Micropogonias undulatus, and Atlantic menhaden Brevoortia tyrannus. Cross-correlation analysis was used to examine the relationships between the larval and juvenile abundances within species. Tests of synchrony across species were used to find similarities in recruitment dynamics for species with similar winter shelf-spawning life-history strategies. Positive correlations were found between the larval and juvenile abundances for three of the six selected species (spot, pinfish, and southern flounder). These three species have similar geographic ranges that primarily lie south of Cape Hatteras. There were no significant correlations between the larval and juvenile abundances for the other three species (summer flounder, Atlantic croaker, and Atlantic menhaden); we suggest several factors that could account for the lack of a relationship. Synchrony was found among the three southern species within both the larval and juvenile abundance time series. These results provide support for using larval ingress measures as indices of abundance for these and other species with similar geographic ranges and winter shelf-spawning life-history strategies

    The Evolving Accretion Disc in the Black Hole X-ray Transient XTE J1859+226

    We present HST, RXTE, and UKIRT observations of the broad band spectra of the black hole X-ray transient XTE J1859+226 during the decline from its 1999-2000 outburst. Our UV spectra define the 2175A interstellar absorption feature very well and based on its strength we estimate E(B-V)=0.58+/-0.12. Hence we deredden our spectra and follow the evolution of the spectral energy distribution on the decline from outburst. We find that the UV and optical data, and the X-ray thermal component when detectable, can be fit with a simple blackbody model of an accretion disc heated by internal viscosity and X-ray irradiation, and extending to close to the last stable orbit around the black hole, although the actual inner radius cannot be well constrained. During the decline we see the disc apparently evolving from a model with the edge dominated by irradiative heating towards one where viscous heating is dominant everywhere. The outer disc radius also appears to decrease during the decline; we interpret this as evidence of a cooling wave moving inwards and discuss its implications for the disc instability model. Based on the normalisation of our spectral fits we estimate a likely distance range of 4.6-8.0kpc, although a value outside of this range cannot securely be ruled out.Comment: 10 pages including figures.     Affective and perceptual responses during reduced-exertion high-intensity interval training (REHIT)

    We have previously demonstrated that reduced-exertion high-intensity interval training (REHIT) is a genuinely time-efficient exercise strategy for improving cardiometabolic health. Here, we examined the affective and perceptual responses to REHIT. Eight young men and women (age 21 ± 1 y, BMI 24.9 ± 2.1 m/kg2, V̇O2max 39 ± 10 ml/kg/min) and 11 men with type 2 diabetes (T2D; age 52 ± 6 y, BMI 29.7 ± 3.1 m/kg2, V̇O2max 29 ± 5 ml/kg/min) took part in three-arm crossover trials with RPE and affective valence measured during, and enjoyment and exercise preferences measured following either: 1) REHIT (2 × 20-s sprints in a 10-min exercise session), 2) HIIT (10 × 1-min efforts) and 3) 30 min MICT. Furthermore, 19 young men and women (age 25 ± 6 y, BMI 24 ± 4 m/kg2, V̇O2max 34 ± 8 ml/kg/min) completed a 6-week REHIT intervention with affective valence during an acute REHIT session measured before and after training. Affect decreases (briefly) during REHIT, but recovers rapidly, and the decline is not significantly different when compared to MICT or HIIT in either healthy participants or T2D patients. Young sedentary participants reported similar levels of enjoyment for REHIT, MICT and HIIT, but 7 out of 8 had a preference for REHIT. Conversely, T2D patients tended to report lower levels of enjoyment with REHIT compared with MICT. The decrease in affective valence observed during an acute REHIT session was significantly attenuated following training. We conclude that affective and perceptual responses to REHIT are no more negative compared to those associated with MICT or HIIT, refuting claims that supramaximal sprint interval training protocols are associated with inherent negative responses

    BRCA1 5382insC mutation in sporadic and familial breast and ovarian carcinoma in Scotland.

    A restriction site-generating polymerase chain reaction (RG-PCR) assay was developed to detect the BRCA1 5382insC mutation that has been reported in multiple, apparently unrelated breast/ovarian carcinoma families. The assay has been used to screen tumour DNA from 250 breast cancer patients (aged 19-86 years) and from 80 ovarian cancer patients (aged 25-90 years) in a local population of patients with no known family history. Altogether, 0/80 (0%) ovarian and 1/250 (0.4%) breast tumour DNAs were found to have the 5382insC mutation. The sole positive case was a 26-year-old woman (BC185) with no known family history. One of the reasons for carrying out this analysis was that the 5382insC mutation had previously been shown to segregate with the disease in a very large Scottish 'West Lothian' kindred having breast/ovarian carcinoma. To investigate whether this apparently isolated case and the known family might be related, haplotypes for the markers D17S855, D17S1322, D17S1323 and D17S1327 were analysed. The mutant haplotype in the large kindred was identical to that reported in all other 5382insC mutation families for all markers with the exception of D17S1327. This implies that there has been a recombination event at the telomeric end of common ancestral haplotype in this family. Since the isolated case we identified carries the 'complete' common haplotype, it is unlikely that she is closely related to the West Lothian family

    Ernst equation and spheroidal coordinates with a cosmological constant term

    We discuss solution generating techniques treating stationary and axially symmetric metrics in the presence of a cosmological constant. Using the recently found extended form of Ernst's complex equation, which takes into account the cosmological constant term, we propose an extension of spheroidal coordinates adapted to asymptotically de-Sitter and anti de-Sitter static spacetimes. In the absence of a cosmological constant we show in addition that any higher dimensional metric parametrised by a single angular momentum can be given by a 4 dimensional solution and Weyl potentials parametrising the extra Killing directions. We explicitly show how a stationary, and a static axially symmetric spacetime solution in 4 dimensions, can be {\it added} together to give a 5 dimensional stationary and axisymmetric solution.Comment: 9 pages, no figures, some additional results to gr-qc/0610091.     Reconstructing Sparticle Mass Spectra using Hadronic Decays

    Most sparticle decay cascades envisaged at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) involve hadronic decays of intermediate particles. We use state-of-the art techniques based on the \kt jet algorithm to reconstruct the resulting hadronic final states for simulated LHC events in a number of benchmark supersymmetric scenarios. In particular, we show that a general method of selecting preferentially boosted massive particles such as W, Z or Higgs bosons decaying to jets, using sub-jets found by the \kt algorithm, suppresses QCD backgrounds and thereby enhances the observability of signals that would otherwise be indistinct. Consequently, measurements of the supersymmetric mass spectrum at the per-cent level can be obtained from cascades including the hadronic decays of such massive intermediate bosons.Comment: 1+29 pages, 12 figure
